A nebuliser converts liquid medication into a fine mist that is inhaled directly into the lungs. Unlike puffer inhalers, nebulisers don't require the patient to coordinate breathing with actuation — making them particularly effective for young children, elderly patients, and anyone who struggles with standard inhalers during respiratory distress.

How Does a Nebuliser Work?

All nebulisers turn liquid medication into aerosol particles small enough to be inhaled into the lower airways. The particle size matters: particles between 1 and 5 microns reach the bronchioles and alveoli where they're needed for asthma, COPD, and lower respiratory infection treatment.

There are two fundamentally different technologies:

Compressor Nebulisers

Uses compressed air through a jet nozzle to create turbulence that breaks liquid into aerosol droplets. Reliable, handles the full range of medications including thick suspensions.

Advantages: Works with virtually all inhaled medications; more durable long-term; lower upfront cost
Disadvantages: Louder (55–65 dB); slower treatment times (10–15 minutes); requires wall power

Best for: Home treatment with a wide range of medications, clinical use, COPD patients on antibiotics or thick suspension medications.

Mesh Nebulisers

Vibrates liquid through a membrane with thousands of tiny holes, producing fine aerosol without a compressor. Near-silent, faster treatment times, lower residual medication waste.

Advantages: Near-silent; battery-powered; faster (5–8 minutes)
Disadvantages: Mesh can clog; not compatible with all medications; higher cost

Best for: Children, travel, patients on standard bronchodilators or saline.

  • Ipratropium bromide (Atrovent) — both
  • Normal and hypertonic saline — both
  • Budesonide (Pulmicort) — compressor; check mesh compatibility
