Sinocare vs Freestyle Libre vs Dexcom: An Honest Comparison

If you've started looking at glucose monitors in Australia, you've probably landed on Freestyle Libre or Dexcom first, they're the two biggest names and for good reason. This isn't a post claiming Sinocare beats them outright, because for a lot of people it doesn't, and we'd rather tell you that upfront than waste your time.

What this post actually covers is who each option suits, where the subsidy scheme changes the maths completely, and where Sinocare's Safe AQ Pro I and iCan i6 genuinely hold their own or do something the bigger brands don't.

The NDSS changes everything, start here

The single biggest factor in what you should buy isn't the device, it's whether you're eligible for the National Diabetes Services Scheme.

If you have type 1 diabetes, you're eligible for subsidised CGM. Through the NDSS, Freestyle Libre 2 Plus and Libre 3 Plus sensors cost around $17.90 per box as a co-payment, some categories are fully subsidised at no cost. Dexcom G7 sits at a similar co-payment, around $11.60 per sensor for eligible users. Against those prices, nothing sold at full retail competes, not us, not anyone.

If you're NDSS eligible for CGM, go through the NDSS and get Libre or Dexcom at the subsidised price. That's the honest advice, and it's why we're not positioning the iCan i6 as a Libre or Dexcom replacement for that group.

Where the picture changes is everyone the subsidy doesn't reach. Type 2 diabetes managed without insulin generally isn't NDSS CGM eligible. People wanting glucose data for general health tracking without a formal diagnosis pathway aren't eligible. Carers or family members wanting to understand a loved one's patterns outside a clinical prescription aren't eligible. For that group, full retail pricing is the real comparison, and that's where Sinocare's numbers get interesting.

CGM: iCan i6 against full retail Libre and Dexcom

At full retail rather than subsidised price, Freestyle Libre 2 runs around $102 per sensor, 14 day wear. The iCan i6 is $99, and runs 15 days, one extra day of wear for a lower price. Warm up on the i6 is 30 minutes, noticeably faster than older CGM generations that need up to two hours before the first reading.

On accuracy, the i6's published MARD is 8.71% across 1,668 matched clinical pairs. That's a genuinely competitive number sitting in the same range independent CGM validation studies report for the established brands, accuracy isn't where the gap is.

Where Libre and Dexcom do have a real structural edge outside the subsidy question is ecosystem, insulin pump integration, years of app refinement, and broader clinician familiarity if you're working closely with an endocrinologist who already knows the Libre or Dexcom data format. That's a genuine consideration for anyone on an insulin pump or intensive insulin therapy, and it's worth being upfront about rather than glossing over.

Blood glucose meters: where the Safe AQ Pro I has a genuine technical edge

This is the category where we think the comparison is most worth having, because it's not about subsidy, it's about a specific spec that most competing meters simply don't match.

The Safe AQ Pro I is validated across a haematocrit range of 10% to 70%. CareSens N, a well established no coding meter sold widely through Australian pharmacy, is validated across 20% to 60% HCT. That's a meaningfully narrower window.

Haematocrit is the proportion of blood made up of red blood cells, and it varies more than people expect, particularly in young children, pregnant women, and elderly patients with anaemia or other conditions affecting blood concentration. A meter validated only for typical adult haematocrit can give a less reliable reading outside that range. The Safe AQ Pro I's wider validated range is a genuine, checkable technical advantage for aged care and paediatric use specifically, not a marketing claim, it's in the published specifications from both manufacturers.

On price, Australian retail for CareSens N strips runs around $29.14 for 100. Our Safe AQ Pro I strips are $27.95 for 100, roughly in line, sometimes slightly under, not a dramatic price difference either way. Where the Safe AQ Pro I adds something CareSens doesn't is the built in ketone warning, alerting when a reading of 13.9 mmol/L or above suggests checking for ketones, useful safety layer that not every entry meter includes.

What we're not claiming

We're not going to tell you Sinocare beats Dexcom on accuracy, we don't have the head to head data to make that claim honestly and wouldn't trust a supplier who did. We're not going to tell you the i6 suits insulin pump users better than Libre, it doesn't have that integration. And if you're NDSS eligible for CGM, we're not going to pretend our full retail price beats a $17 subsidised sensor, because it doesn't and nobody's does.

Where each option makes sense

NDSS eligible for CGM (type 1 diabetes, or meet other eligibility criteria): access Libre or Dexcom through the subsidy scheme first. Talk to your credentialled diabetes educator about eligibility if you're not sure.

Not NDSS eligible, want CGM anyway: the iCan i6 is a genuine, clinically validated option at a lower full retail price than Libre, with a day longer wear and faster warm up.

Choosing a finger prick meter, any eligibility: the Safe AQ Pro I's wide HCT range makes it a particularly strong choice for aged care, paediatric use, or anyone whose blood concentration may sit outside the typical adult range, alongside competitive strip pricing.
